The task was clear \u2013 this server needs to be virtualized into a vSphere 7 environment, running vSAN.<br>The problem with this task is that to convert (P2V) a 2003 server you need to install vCenter Converter 6.2 on it, since the latest release 6.3 simply doesn\u2019t work on 2003 servers (It won\u2019t install).<br>Next problem is that vCenter Converter 6.2 doesn\u2019t work with vSAN 7 \u2013 only \u201ctraditional storage\u201d can be used as target \u2013 but in this case there were no other storage than vSAN that could be used as target.<br>What to do? \u2013 read on\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>So, since we can install vCenter converter 6.2 on 2003 physical servers and we can use vSAN 7 as target in version 6.3 \u2013 the solution is simple then \u2013 both products must be used in combination.<br>First thing to do is to find some temporary storage that can be used to host a copy of the complete 2003 server that is target for the conversion \u2013 I used an USB hard drive.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next thing is to install vCenter converter on the 2003 physical server. Install the server, agent and the client.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"802\" height=\"319\" src=\"https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-1.jpg 802w, https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-1-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-1-768x305.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now make and offline P2V of the server by using the option to convert \u201cthis local machine\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"791\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-2.jpg 791w, https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-2-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-2-768x369.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">As destination type select \u201cVMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine\u201d<br>Select the path of the USB drive where the machine should be located.<br>REMEMBER TO DESELECT THE USB DRIVE UNDER \u201cOPTIONS\u201d AS SOURCE DRIVE (next screen)<br><br>Carry on and convert the server down to the USB drive!<br>When the conversion has finished you can disconnect the USB drive and connect it to a (newer) host that runs vCenter converter 6.3, and import it from there, into vSphere 7 \/ vSAN<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-3.jpg 794w, https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-3-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vmoller.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/p2v-3-768x374.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">As source system just select \u201cVMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine\u201d and point the path to the folder that contains the VM on the USB drive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thats it!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>I used these two versions of vCenter converter:<br>VMware-converter-en-6.2.0-7348398.exe (build 8466193 did NOT work!)<br>VMware-converter-en-6.3.0-20575345.exe<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You are not very likely to bump into Windows 2003 physical servers anymore \u2013 but nevertheless that just happened to me a week ago.
